The Blue Streak Ensemble was founded in 2011 by award-winning composer Margaret Brouwer to bring contemporary chamber music to Ohio communities along Lake Erie. They achieved immediate success and quickly began to expand performances in and around Cleveland including recording sessions at Oberlin’s Clonick Hall to make the CD recently released by Naxos called Shattered, Chamber Music of Margaret Brouwer. The Blue Streak Ensemble has also given concerts in Athens, OH, Virginia, Wisconsin and New York City. The vibrant, young musicians perform in area orchestras and ensembles including the Cleveland Orchestra, CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the Cleveland Chamber Music Society and other local chamber ensembles. Their various teaching positions include the Cleveland Institute of Music, Baldwin Wallace University, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State University and the Music Settlement.
Featuring Brouwer’s music and the music of other fine living composers, BSE has been dedicated to presenting concerts with an eclectic array of the latest, most expressive and exciting new music. In some concerts, Blue Streak also performs repertoire that spans 400 years, juxtaposing the old and the new. In these concerts, the mission is to show the value of the connection between the rich music of the past and recently written new music. The listener is pulled along through a varied and changing palette of traditional and progressive sounds in a compelling stream.
In addition to current positions in Cleveland, the musicians of Blue Streak have also performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Merkin Hall, Kennedy Center, LA Philharmonic, and New World Symphony. They are committed to the Blue Streak Ensemble, and to developing and fostering transformative musical experiences for new and existing audiences of all ages and all walks of life by sharing the beautiful music of the 21st century with them.
A Note from the Director, Margaret Brouwer:
The infant 21st century is blossoming with wonderful newly written music. Music that touches the heart and soul, that speaks with our collective voice of a person living now, that tackles issues we all struggle with, that speaks of loss and coping with loss, that sings of love and family. Blue Streak Ensemble and I are dedicated to programming music that speaks to all of us. There is no need to be afraid to hear this music. We all NEED music. Sometimes a lovely sing-along in the background of our day is just the thing. But we also need music that we listen to with all our attention. Music we hear with heart, mind and soul that soothes our lives, makes us think, helps us work through times of trouble, enhances our celebration of joy.
Blue Streak Ensemble is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
